In a few weeks, I'll be off to San Francisco/Oakland for my yearly "holiday grind" at my San Francisco office.
Last year, I heard many "rumors" that it was "OK" to travel with medical marijuana if flying out Oakland International airport as long as you have your original doctor's paperwork (which I personally carry all the time anyway). Several fellow patients from my collective in Oakland ensured me it was a not a problem if flying out of Oakland but; of course, be careful. So, last holiday season in December (2009) I tested this by brining back home some "Eat Me Caps" obtained from Harborside Health Center (HHC). At the time, I had yet to see such a non-flower alternative at my collective in Southern California. So, with two containers of "Eat Me Caps" in my laptop bag, I enter Oakland International Airport and board the plane with no problem or issues. I breezed by TSA security screening and I even walked by a few Alameda Country Sheriffs and a "Drug Dog." Was I scared ... YES! My concern was not as much Oakland International (it's obvious that City of Oakland is VERY MMJ friendly) but, the airport I was coming back home to in Southern California. So of course, the moment I land, I exited the airport as soon as I can get home and call the "test" a success.
Given the recent news I read today about Kurtis Blow being cited at Los Angeles International with "flower" marijuana in his pants, I now must re-consider my thoughts about air travel and marijuana.
Something tells me the primary reason why Kurtis Blow was caught was due to the new TSA screening procedures. Apparently, these new procedures are more intricate and chances are now much higher you'll get caught with "something" vs. a year ago. The risk of "pat downs" have increased, screeners are questioning more items, and items are just being looked at more carefully. I had planned to take with me some "THC Strips" with me up to Oakland and when returning home possibly bringing back down some "Eat Some Caps." But, given this recent news, I think it is best to scratch all that. Granted, these are not "flowers" and you can "hide" caps and strips much easier but; still for me, the risk is not worth the reward. If you are caught, most likely you'll get a simple citation like Kurtis Blow did but, THE LAST THING I WANT IS ANY "RECORD" OR ANYTHING ATTACHED TO MY NAME.
If I was "young," and/or childless without a family, maybe I would take the chance but, fact is as a family guy, safety for me and my family is priority one. So, if like me really evaluate the need to hop on a plane with your "medicine;" especially, if flying within California. The way I look it at today is now when I travel up to Northern California, I'll just enjoy "medicine" offered up there that is not readily available in Southern California thus, keeping constant variety which most of us seem to enjoy anyway.
Remember... be safe! Some actions are just not worth it.
Cheers (& Cough),
